Mad Dog and Glory (1993)

Mad Dog and Glory (1993)

Genre: drama

Starring: Robert De Niro, Uma Thurman, Bill Murray, David Caruso

Directed by: John McNaughton

WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT?
When a Chicago cop ( De Nireo ) saves a life of a mobster ( Murray ), in his gratitude he not only offers hm his friendship to his saviour... but his girl as well.

WORTH WATCHING?

No.

Only for De Niro's and Murray's fans.

And it's definitely not a comedy.

A comedy is supposed to bring good vibrations and at least few laughs, and there's no laughs in this one at all.

It's much more of a drama, with murders, with kicking people's faces, with cops being humiliated, with sex trafficking, modern slavery and all that crap we don't really want to hear or read but we hear and read about all the time.

I'm not sure who and why even thought about it as of a comedy.

Ok, so there is Bill Murray who is a comedian, a great one, no doubt.
And he's actually even a part-time stand up comic in this one as well.
And as this stand up comic he's supposed to be funny too.
And he's also supposed to be funny while he's kicking others or getting kicked.

But all of these don't really make it a comedy.

I didn't laugh.
I didn't even understand why did this unlikely friendship happened so easily in the first place.
Why did not only a single cop, but a whole bunch of cops suddenly become friendy with the BAD GUY...

It would make more sense if it was a really laughable COMEDY, but it's approach towards the material was somewhat "real", brutal, dark...

But still, I did sunk in the story, as I was simply curious how will those dramatic situations evolve, and will it end in a good way for the good characters.

I didn't even care much about De Niro's character to be honest.
He's likeable and he does a good job, and you wish him good, wish him that he could succeed.

But the whole love story is not convincing and not that interesting to actually sell itself and sell the movie. Not to me, at least.

I didn't really like how humiliated the hero is in this one. Who cares that he gets what he wants, and it ends ok. Kind of ok at least. I think they jumped the shark, went over the fence with this idea that kicking a policeman by a mobster a thousand times is something normal, while it was actually disgusting. In my opinion. They went just too far.

Ok. I understand that there are people in this world who are cruel and even the police can't do anything about it. But I didn't understand why they acted they acted in this particular movie.
I didn't understand why they would even let their buddy to be beaten so badly by this thug.

It didn't do any good to the movie. It didn't help the character. It didn't help the story. So why all that suffering?
Couldn't they go with a good old traditional shooutout, since it was all about cops vs goons?
Or since it was a COMEDY, couldn't they make it laughable and a little bit lighter?

It's pretty dark instead, don't know what they wanted to achieve by doing that.

It's not worth the effort put into it by actors and all of the movie departments.
The story itself could sell, if it went the way I thought it would go - a funny friendship between two people who should never ever become friends, because they are from two different worlds.
Insstead, they've send it trough a dramatic roller coaster.

And for what purpose?
